Speaking on his Planet Tyrus show, the 53-year-old said when the idea was first pitched to him he was ready to quit the promotion, since he didn’t want to do the character.

“I came off the road and went straight to Dusty (Rhodes). He was waiting for me and no one else. He kicked everyone out of the arena. He shut down the school. I walked in there, and I was telling him I wanted to quit. It was a lot for me because this was my dream, and it was ending because I’m not going out there dancing. I’m not doing that sh*t,” he said.

The situation was tough for Tyrus because he had been built as a serious character until that point. He also revealed that the gimmick change came after Vince McMahon heard him making jokes with his friends backstage.

Dusty Rhodes convinced Tyrus to not leave WWE

Tyrus was unhappy with the proposed character change and decided to meet Dusty Rhodes about it. The conversation led to a change in perspective for Tyrus.

Dusty Rhodes confronted him by asking if he was better than him and then narrated the story of his own arrival in the Stamford-based promotion. Dusty told him how he was a made star but was saddled with wearing a polka dot outfit, but he still made it work for his family.

The Hall of Famer offered to work with him, and it led to the creation of the Funkasaurus character. Tyrus carried the gimmick until his release from the promotion in 2014.
