Ludvig Aberg exploded out of the gates in his second round on his way to a score of 63 at The Players.

The Swede holds the lead of the tournament at TPC Sawgrass, shooting a 29 on the front nine after going five under over his first four holes. He was threatening the course record midway through the round, but still finished strong to shoot nine under on the day.

He’s been trending in a positive direction over the last few weeks, and that has culminated in near flawless play at Sawgrass. Much has been expected of the young superstar when he burst onto the scene, and it looks to be finally coming together now.

And Aberg confessed that he achieved a career first during his second round.

Ludvig Aberg has never started a round better than his second round at The Players

Aberg was asked after Friday’s action if he’s never started a round better than he did that day, and he said, “I don’t think in a tournament. I’ve probably done it at home at some point. But no, I don’t think so.”

He continued, “I said it previously, I saw some nice things over the weekend at Pebble in my game. I saw some nice things at Riv, even though I got off to a slow start in the tournament. Yeah, just kind of progressively getting better.

“I feel like I’ve understood a little bit more what’s important for me in my golf swing and kind of sticking to that, not necessarily trying to look away other ways around it, and keeping it very simple.

“I think my mind is very good when it’s simple, and when things are very easy, and that’s what I’ve felt like I’ve been able to do over the last couple of weeks.”

His swing looks smooth at the best of times, but so far this week, he has glided around the course with enviable ease. Now all there is to do is continue that form over the weekend.

Ludvig Aberg has a unique advantage at TPC Sawgrass

This is Aberg’s home course, and it certainly looks like it through two rounds. He was asked if being so familiar with Sawgrass gives him any advantage, and he replied: “Yeah, perhaps. Like you said, I play here every now and then. I’ve seen the golf course in probably every wind possible, which I know this week we’re going to have some different winds.

“Is there an advantage to it? Maybe. But Sawgrass is also a golf course where you have to execute golf shots, and I love the golf course because it’s right in front of you. It’s very straightforward, but you still have to do it.

“Is there an advantage? Maybe. But you still have to hit the shots.”

He’s navigated the course expertly so far, but that becomes much harder to do when the pressure mounts on the weekend. Let’s see if Aberg is up to that task.
