In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, Tyra Mae Steele seemingly dropped a bombshell. Steele polled her followers about the situation she was in with the biggest wrestling company in the world.
“On a weekend off working for WWE, I went back to Olympic wrestling, won gold at Worlds, prize purse was $350000…. Tried to go back to WWE that Monday. They moved me up to Raw, just to tell me they had to let me go bc I went behind their back…. So was this a Nightmare or Dream,” Steele tweeted.
Steele’s tweet caught like wildfire, and many assumed that she announced her release. However, it’s a made-up scenario and a dream for the former Olympian, according to Fightful’s Sean Ross Sapp.
Tyra Mae Steele to leave WWE and return to amateur wrestling?
Before becoming a pro wrestler, Tyra Mae Steele was a freestyle wrestler for Team USA. She won a gold medal at the 2020 Olympics. She was only the third Olympic gold medalist in the company’s history, following in the footsteps of Kurt Angle and Gable Steveson.
In addition to an Olympic gold medal, Steele was also a two-time gold medal winner at the World Wrestling Championships in 2019 and 2022. She joined WWE in 2023 and made her in-ring debut on March 30, 2024. She mainly wrestled on LFG, NXT, NXT Level Up and Evolve.
While it appeared that Steele announced her release, she’s seemingly thinking about returning to amateur wrestling. Steele tweeted about competing at the 2026 World Wrestling Championship, which is scheduled for October 2024 to November 1 in Manama, Bahrain.
Gable Steveson is a prime example, though he was released before returning to amateur wrestling in 2024. It will be interesting to see if Steele is allowed to compete in the World Wrestling Championship despite being under a WWE deal.
