Liverpool are now scrambling to correct a player crisis at the club. The Reds need to sort things and fast.
Liverpool may have spent record amounts last summer but it’s clear to everyone that the spending didn’t work. This squad isn’t what it should be, with issues in virtually every area of the pitch.

Midfield needs sorting, the attack lacks pace, but it’s centre-back where a full-blown crisis is brewing. Enough so that it simply needs to be corrected after this season.
But can Liverpool adequately do that? We’re not so sure and reports suggest they’re scrambling to try and get things in order. Or at least, get them as close to orderly as they can manage.
Centre-backs: Situation Summary
Current Defensive Pairing and Contract Status
As of March 4, 2026, Liverpool’s central defence is facing a critical turning point regarding its long-term stability. While Virgil van Dijk remains the cornerstone of the backline after signing a two-year extension in April 2025 that keeps him at the club until June 2027, the situation surrounding his primary partner is much more urgent. Ibrahima Konaté is currently in the final months of his contract, which is set to expire in June 2026. Although head coach Arne Slot confirmed on March 2 that negotiations are ongoing, the lack of a signed agreement has led to intense speculation linking the French international with a move to Real Madrid or Inter Milan as a free agent this summer.

Future Reinforcements and Squad Changes
To address the uncertainty and ageing profile of the defence, Sporting Director Richard Hughes has already finalized a major addition for the 2026/27 season. The club officially secured the signing of 20-year-old Jérémy Jacquet from Stade Rennais for a total package of £60 million. Jacquet is finishing the current campaign on loan in France and is expected to integrate directly into the first-team rotation this July. This follows the permanent departure of Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen last year for £35 million, though Liverpool reportedly retains a €60 million buy-back clause that could become a factor as early as 2027.
Utility Roles and Fitness Depth
Joe Gomez continues to serve as the vital “third man” in the rotation, though he has spent much of the current season deputizing at right-back due to long-term injuries to Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong. Gomez is under contract until June 2027, but he is widely viewed as a candidate for a summer transfer as Liverpool looks to refresh the squad and maximize his market value before he enters the final year of his deal. Additionally, the club is monitoring the progress of young defender Giovanni Leoni, who arrived as part of the defensive overhaul, while rumours persist regarding a potential €100 million pursuit of Inter Milan’s Alessandro Bastoni to provide a left-footed option for the future.

Analysis of the crisis
So Liverpool have Virgil van Dijk leading their defence, as he has done since 2018. The only problem with that is his age: Van Dijk turns 35 this summer and will have one year left on his deal.
But are Liverpool setup to move on from their captain? Not at all.
Giovanni Leoni was signed in the summer but he’s not only far too young to be a regular, he’s also coming back from a serious knee injury. Absolute patience is necessary there.
Jeremy Jacquet will arrive in the summer but again, he’s too young. Still only 20, the plan is to develop Jacquet long-term.
The senior options are not what Liverpool need, either. The dream is for Ibrahima Konate to replace Van Dijk as the leader, which is the role he was signed for back in 2022.

The Frenchman is currently in line to leave the club at the end of the season, however. He may well renew his contract but things will need to progress more than they have in the last 18 months for that to happen.
Joe Gomez also has a future in doubt. He will have just one more year left and nearly departed for Milan last summer. There’s a very good chance he moves on later this year.
The defeat against Wolves on Tuesday highlighted how poorly the defence is structured right now. Both centre-backs made mistakes on Wolves’ opener, while they conceded yet another late winner.
But the short-term isn’t performing, the near-short-term is completely unclear, and the long-term is wildly uncertain in the post-Van Dijk era. It’s a crisis and Liverpool must find an answer to it this summer.
