Oisin Smyth’s 96th-minute penalty kept Partick Thistle within two points of St Johnstone at the top of the Scottish Championship as the league’s top two played out a thrilling draw at McDiarmid Park.

Smyth put the visitors into the lead on the stroke of half-time after an excellent driving run from Tony Watt, but Simo Valakari’s side were much improved after the break and went in front thanks to Alfie Agyeman’s deflected strike and Josh McPake’s superb low drive.

The hosts pushed for a third that would have killed the game and taken them five clear at the summit, but in the final seconds of second-half stoppage time Cheick Diabate took down Thistle striker Alex Samuel and gave Smyth the opportunity to equalise from the spot.

Although Toby Steward dived the right way, the on-loan St Mirren midfielder found the bottom corner to the delight of the travelling Thistle support.

St Johnstone still have a game in hand on Mark Wilson’s outfit as well as that two-point advantage.
