Jimmy Stanger was off and running on Thursday at the American Express. He made birdie at the par-5 11th, his second hole of the day, which was sandwiched in between a pair of pars. Then, at one under, he arrived to the 13th tee and his week, effectively, ended.

First came water ball No. 1 on the tricky par 3, which is not quite an island green like the 17th at Pete Dye’s Stadium course, but is no less treacherous. There is, however, miles of room to miss on the right.

But Stanger’s tee ball was a left pull that never crossed land, so he had to re-tee. KERPLUNK. Water ball No. 2. Yet again, a dead pull that did not cross land.

Stanger was now hitting five from the box, the stuff of absolute nightmares for a professional golfer who has to somehow get that ball in the hole. For us mere mortals, we could have simply written down a six and moved on. Or went to the drop area despite not crossing land and breaking the rules. On tour, Stanger had to re-tee again, and we’ll give you one guess what he did next.

Splash, and not the Steph Curry kind. Golf Channel captured some of the excruciating footage:

At long last, Stanger finally was able to miss right, and in rather impressive fashion was able to get up and down for a SEXTUPLE bogey 9. Sextuple. Not one you hear every day. Not one Stanger ever wants to experience again.

Stanger was a great sport about it on social media after, tweeting out the only applicable GIF:

Well played, Romes Jimmy. Even more well played was the rest of his round after the debacle. Well, sort of. Stanger made four birdies and two double bogeys, going even par for the remaining 14 holes to shoot a five-over 77. At T-151, his one shot clear of dead last.
