Notre Dame (-24.5) over Purdue (-112)
The No. 24 Fighting Irish are 0-2 to begin the season, but for the first time this year, they’ll play a non-ranked opponent. Notre Dame lost 27-24 on the road to No. 10 Miami before falling at home, 41-40, to No. 16 Texas A&M. Purdue is 2-1, and coming off a 33-17 loss to USC last week. Notre Dame, which made the National Championship Game last season, features a talented offense again this season, led by running back Jeremiyah Love. Although Love has just 127 rushing yards this season, he rushed for 1,125 yards with 17 touchdowns last season, heading into a matchup against a Purdue team that allowed 178 rushing yards and two touchdowns to USC last week. If only a few plays had gone differently, Notre Dame could be 2-0 instead of 0-2 despite having one of the most challenging starts to the season in the nation. When playing in South Bend on Saturday, the model expects better results for the Fighting Irish, projecting Notre Dame to cover the spread in 60% of simulations.
Michigan (-1.5) over Nebraska (-108)
The Wolverines had no problems with Central Michigan last weekend with a 63-3 victory following a 24-13 road loss to No. 18 Oklahoma the week before. Bryce Underwood, the No. 1 recruit in the Class of 2025, threw for 235 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 114 yards and two touchdowns in his best collegiate game yet. Michigan (2-1) rushed for 381 yards as a team, and they’ll lean on a balanced pass-run offense against Nebraska. The Cornhuskers are 3-0 this season, but they haven’t been challenged with an elite program such as Michigan yet this year. Nebraska went 7-6 last season after seven straight losing seasons, and although Matt Rhule is turning the program around, it’s not at Michigan’s level yet. The model projects Michigan to cover the spread in 64% of simulations.
USC (-19.5) over Michigan State (-108)
The Trojans moved to No. 25 in the nation after their 33-17 victory over Purdue last weekend, and although Michigan State remains one of the bigger names in college football, the Spartans haven’t played up to their reputation in recent years. Michigan State enters off three straight losing seasons as it begins Year Two of the Jonathan Smith era after going 5-7 last year. The Spartans are 3-0 this season, but they were favored in all three contests, including by more than 20 points twice. Michigan State enters an entirely different situation on Saturday night in California against Lincoln Riley and the Trojans. Jayden Maiava has 989 passing yards with six touchdowns and no interceptions over two games, and running back Waymond Jordan has 286 rushing yards and three touchdowns for a USC offense averaging 55 points per game. The model projects the Trojans to cover the spread in 61% of simulations.
