Jordan Love said on Thursday that despite needing surgery on his left thumb the Green Bay Packers quarterback does not believe the injury will limit him at all during the season.
A little over two weeks ago Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst told reporters that Love underwent surgery to fix a torn ligament in the thumb on his non-throwing hand. Love had injured the digit after hitting a helmet during a preseason loss to the New York Jets. There was no concern at the time for the quarterback’s status, with Gutekunst saying Love would be back to practice the following week.

Love could have tried to play through the injury, but he said on Thursday that without 100% stability in the thumb, his strength would not be where it needed to be.
“It was pretty much just a limp thumb. I couldn’t really do much with it, and it’s just something that I wasn’t, before the season, I’m not trying to be dealing with that throughout the course of the season,” Love said. “Who knows if that would have kept getting re-injured, kept getting messed up, and who knows how that would have been going through a whole season? So I think, and the doctors’ opinion was, just go ahead and get the surgery knocked out and try to get back to as 100 percent as possible for the season.”

Now with the Packers’ opener against the Detroit Lions nine days away and Love still sporting a brace on the thumb and only handing the ball off with his right hand, there remain “no concerns,” according to the quarterback.
“It’ll be some weeks having to brace it up and just keep it protected,” Love said. “It’s one of those things, we’ll play it by ear, as I start getting into games and seeing how it feels, as you get back to live contact. But there’ll be some time having that brace still.”
As ESPN’s Rob Demovsky noted, Love did not begin participating in 11-on-11 sessions until Wednesday and prior to that he was not taking snaps under center or in shotgun formation, only holding the ball or simulating snaps.

Love, who was very happy to see Micah Parsons traded to Green Bay on Thursday, also got some help this week with wide receivers Jayden Reed and Dontayvion Wicks returning to practice after suffering injuries earlier in training camp.
Love missed two games last season after suffering an MCL sprain during the season opener in Brazil against the Philadelphia Eagles. He also dealt with groin and elbow injuries later in the season. He would end up throwing for 3,389 yards with 25 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
