First Coast Women’s Amateur competitors brave heat at Sawgrass Country Club
The second round of the First Coast Women’s Amateur golf tournament was a long day at the Sawgrass Country Club for the field of 79 players.
- Nancy Cox shot a 70 in the second round to take a three-shot lead in the First Coast Women’s Amateur.
- Ava Cottis and Cambree Hodge are tied for second at 6-over 150.
- Corey Weworski leads the senior division, and Kim Bruce leads the super senior division.
Two-time Florida Times-Union high school player of the year Nancy Cox birdied her last two holes on July 21 at the Sawgrass Country Club to assure a three-shot lead in the second round of the First Coast Women’s Amateur.
Cox had a strong front nine with birdies at Nos. 4, 7 and 8, but played her next eight holes at 1-over. She then birdied the last two on putts of 15 feet at no. 17 and 8 feet at the last for a 70 and a 36-hole total of 3-over-par 147.
Ava Cottis (78), an incoming freshman at the University of North Florida, and Cambree Hodge of Fleming Island (76), who is playing at Daytona State College, are tied at 6-over 150.
Cottis was the first-round leader with a 72. Cox knocked seven shots off her first-round 77.
The field of 79 players in three divisions battled heat early and were then chased off the course by dangerous weather. They were able to return in the late afternoon to finish the round.
Corey Weworski of Carlsbad, Calif., (74) leads the senior division by seven shots over Mary Jane Hiestand at 5-over 149. Kim Bruce of Fleming Island shot 76 to lead the senior field division by 12 shots over Debbie Caruso of Jacksonville.
