The final major championship of the year is here, and the R&A is sticking with last year’s prize pool to go with the iconic Claret Jug.

The British Open will offer a $17 million purse this season at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland, which matches the record-setting purse offered last year. While that’s the highest in the event’s history, it’s the lowest among the four major championships.

The U.S. Open, by comparison, offered a $21.5 million purse last month to lead the majors. The Masters had a $21 million purse, too, and the PGA Tour’s signature events typically carry purses of at least $20 million. The PGA Championship wasn’t far behind with its $19 million purse.

As they didn’t increase the prize pool — which is something R&A CEO Mark Darbon is proud about — the winner this week will earn a $3.1 million check.

“We have held flat this year. I think prize fund is still 60% up on when we were here last time in 2019. That’s strong growth by anyone’s standards,” Darbon said on Wednesday. “We think the choice we’ve made is really appropriate.”

Top-ranked Scottie Scheffler is once again the overwhelming favorite this week at the British Open. Rory McIlroy is back home in Northern Ireland, too, ready to avenge his awful showing the last time when the tournament was played at Royal Portrush. Jon Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau are also among the favorites this week on BetMGM, as is last year’s winner Xander Schauffele.

Here’s a look at how much is up for grabs this week at Royal Portrush.
