On Tuesday, MLB announced the 2024 Gold Glove finalists, a talented slate of players that features the likes of Phillies first baseman Bryce Harper, Chicago Cubs shortstop Dansby Swanson, Yankees right fielder Juan Soto and Guardians left fielder Steven Kwan.
Gold Gloves are awarded annually to the players deemed to have been the best defensive performers at their respective positions. The nominations include three finalists at each position in each league, as well as a utility position, which was first awarded in 2022. The utility finalists are all players who played multiple positions throughout the season.
The finalists for the nine standard positions were determined by two factors, per the league: A pool of 30 MLB managers and up to six coaches, whose votes counted for 75% of the players’ selection, and the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) Defensive Index, which made up the other 25%. For the utility position, Rawlings and SABR collaborated for a separate formula to determine selections.
In the AL, a first-time Gold Glove winner is guaranteed at catcher, as none of the three finalists — Freddy Fermin, Cal Raleigh and Jake Rogers — has won the honor before. Fermin and Raleigh are first-time nominees.
The winners will be unveiled on Sunday, Nov. 3, at 8:30 p.m. ET on ESPN.
