There is a growing sense at West Ham that one of their top midfield signings may soon leave London. The rhythm that once defined James Ward-Prowse’s play has faded, creating uncertainty about his role in the squad. Since Nuno Espírito Santo took charge, a clear tactical shift has begun to reshape the team.
Journalist Pete O’Rourke, speaking on the Inside Track podcast, said Ward-Prowse now looks unlikely to stay at the club beyond January. He explained that the midfielder seems almost ready to leave, knowing his place under Nuno has been reduced. The Portuguese coach has different needs in midfield, and Ward-Prowse’s controlled, possession-based style no longer fits that approach.
The difference between what Ward-Prowse offers and what Nuno wants has grown with each match. The 30-year-old’s appearances have dropped, his influence has declined, and his creative spark appears only in short spells. Reports say the midfielder is already considering his next move and preparing to leave once the transfer window opens.
“It does appear that Ward-Prowse doesn’t have a future at West Ham. I think Ward-Prowse himself is almost resigned to leaving West Ham in January, following the arrival of Nuno and is already assessing his options. It just seems that Ward-Prowse has no place in Nuno’s plans at the London Stadium. For the player himself, I don’t think he’ll feature in Nuno’s plans between now and January, and if Ward-Prowse wants to move away, I’m sure West Ham won’t stand in his way. Maybe the best solution for all parties will be a parting of ways in the January window.”
From the club’s side, a sale might match their financial plan. West Ham often use a sell-to-buy model, and selling him could help fund new signings. West Ham want to sign Mateo Pellegrino, showing that their transfer planning has already started. Their earlier move for a €35 million proposal for Pape Gueye also shows their aim to rebuild the midfield. With January coming closer, both sides seem ready to part ways peacefully, suggesting that a mutual split could suit everyone.
A Tactical Misfit That Demands Resolution

Nuno’s football focuses on compactness, energy, and speed in transition. His teams depend on midfielders who press hard, win the ball quickly, and protect the defence with urgency. Ward-Prowse, on the other hand, plays with precision and rhythm, controlling the tempo, moving the ball, and delivering deadly set pieces. This difference has created a tactical gap too wide to close. His brief time under Nuno at Nottingham Forest showed the same issue, and it has now appeared again at West Ham.
Few can question Ward-Prowse’s technical skill or work ethic, but his game does not suit the style Nuno wants. The manager prefers mobility and aggression, which does not easily include a playmaker who thrives on control. West Ham, trying to refresh their midfield, may see his exit as a chance to bring in players who fit better. A January move now seems less like a surprise and more like a natural step for both the club and the player as they look for new directions.
