The Mercedes-Benz S-Class is an icon. For more than 70 years, it’s been the go-to choice for buyers in search of the ultimate luxury sedan. Even with strong alternatives from brands like BMW and Genesis in recent years, the S-Class still reigns supreme in the premium segment.

Mercedes has no plans of giving up the luxury crown heading into 2027. Meet the all-new Mercedes-Benz S-Class.

Design & Technology: Familiar, But Different

The new S-Class doesn’t shy away from the design elements that have defined it for decades. The 2027 model is instantly recognizable, with very Mercedes-esque headlight fixtures flanking a slightly larger grille, sharper bumper details, and—look closely—three-pointed stars lining each of the grille’s vertical slats. It’s overkill in the best way.

Around back, the design takes inspiration from the latest E-Class. Each horizontally oriented taillight houses three star-shaped lighting elements, connected by a sleek strip of chrome across the trunk lid. Additional chrome accents frame the dual exhaust tips at the base of the bumper.

The side profile is classic S-Class, with a tall greenhouse for front and rear passengers and a smooth roofline that flows seamlessly into the trunk lid. Standard 19-inch, high-spoke wheels round out the premium look.

Inside, the S-Class gets subtle but noticeable upgrades. The once-dominant Hyperscreen has been toned down; rather than a single, uninterrupted pane of glass, the instrument cluster and central touchscreen are now entirely separate.

Mercedes calls its new setup the “Superscreen.” It consists of a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 14.3-inch central touchscreen, and a 12.3-inch passenger display. The system runs the latest version of Benz’s MBUX interface, adding features like generative AI and native Google Maps integration.

That technology extends to the rear seats as well, where two 13.1-inch displays are mounted to the front seatbacks. Rear passengers get two fully detachable MBUX remotes, and for the first time, Mercedes offers native apps like Disney+ and YouTube directly through the MBUX system.

Performance: An Unexpected V8

Maybe the biggest upgrade for the 2027 S-Class is under the hood. The S580 is powered by an all-new 4.0-liter V8 engine featuring a flat-plane crankshaft—yes, a flat-plane crank in a luxury sedan. The engine produces 530 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque, boosted by a mild-hybrid system with an integrated starter-generator that adds an extra 23 horsepower. Mercedes estimates a 0–60 mph time of just 3.9 seconds.

The base S500 receives a new inline-six engine producing 442 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque, or up to 472 lb-ft with the overtorque function activated. Despite being the entry-level model, it still reaches 60 mph in an estimated 4.3 seconds and has an electronically limited top speed of 130 mph.

Mercedes also keeps the plug-in hybrid option in the lineup for 2027. The S580e pairs an updated inline-six engine with an electric motor for a combined output of 576 horsepower—73 more than before—and 553 lb-ft. Mercedes hasn’t released an updated electric-only range figure yet, but it’s expected to beat the previous model’s 46 miles.

Across the lineup, power is sent to all four wheels through a nine-speed automatic transmission. Mercedes’ Airmatic air suspension comes standard on every model, while E-Active Body Control with intelligent adaptive damping remains optional.

Pricing & Availability: To Be Announced

Pricing for the 2027 Mercedes-Benz S-Class hasn’t been announced yet. That said, with the current 2026 model starting at $120,850, don’t expect the new version to come in any cheaper.

More details—including final pricing and full specifications—should be revealed closer to the S-Class’s on-sale date later this year.
