The first round of the 2025 NCAA Tournament came to close Friday night, wrapping up two days of nonstop action. The tournament bracket started with 68 teams, and the field has been reduced to 32 as the race to the Sweet 16 reaches a full sprint.
Every top-four seed won its opening first-round game and advanced for the first time since 2017 and just the sixth time in NCAA Tournament history. The lone upset came when No. 12 seed Colorado State defeated No. 5 seed Memphis 78-70. The Rams closed as the betting favorite against the Tigers and used a big second half to pull away.
No. 1 seed Duke won its NCAA Tournament opener 93-49 over No. 16 seed Mount St. Mary’s to advance to the second round. Duke star freshman Cooper Flagg returned to the lineup after a two-game absence from a leg injury suffered in last week’s ACC Tournament and finished with 14 points.
Although every top seed advanced, not every team won comfortably. No. 2 Alabama was pushed to the brink by No. 15 seed Robert Morris before closing the game on a big run en route to a 90-81 win.
