Aug. 11 Notes

– Dropping off the list: Jake Burger (265th), Yennier Cano (279th), Logan Henderson (282nd), Michael Soroka (284th), Kristian Campbell (285th), Cole Sands (286th), Will Vest (290th), Ke’Bryan Hayes (292nd), Jeff McNeil (295th), Jon Gray (296th), Andrew Benintendi (297th), Wenceel Pérez (300th)

– Benintendi and Pérez are still in the next 10 here, along with closing candidates Jose A. Ferrer (Nationals) and Justin Topa (Twins) and some rehabbers (Nolan Arenado, Evan Carter, Roki Sasaki and Jacob Wilson).

– The Phillies are saying all of the right things, but it’s definitely pretty scary that Zack Wheeler needed to be pushed back a couple of days because of shoulder stiffness that has been bothering him for a while and then saw his velocity dip by two mph in his return Sunday. With the way things are going for the Mets, the Phillies can afford to give Wheeler some time off prior to October, and they just might choose to do so eventually. I’m dropping Wheeler from 13th to 42nd for now.

– Now I really wish I had left David Bednar in the top 300 last week. With Devin Williams giving away the closer’s role in the Bronx in pretty spectacular fashion, it seems like it’s going to be all Bednar for now. Camilo Doval hasn’t made a great first impression, and while Luke Weaver is back putting up zeroes of late, his peripherals aren’t what they were early on this season. Williams will bounce back once again, but unlike the first time around, he’s probably not going to be just handed the keys in the ninth again, not unless Bednar opens the door for him. I have Bednar 153rd and Williams 247th this week.

– It sounds like the Orioles will call up top prospects Dylan Beavers and Samuel Basallo after Aug. 15, allowing them to retain their rookie eligibility next year. Beavers, hitting .305/.422/.526 as Triple-A Norfolk’s primary right fielder, would certainly be up already if not for the Aug. 15 “deadline” that could allow the Orioles to earn a draft pick if he finishes in the top two in AL Rookie of the Year honors. Basallo is a little bit more complicated of a fit now, as opposed to when Adley Rutschman and Ryan Mountcastle were on the injured list. Still, Basallo is so obviously qualified for his first chance that it’d be a crime not to give it to him. He’s hit .279/.384/.612 with 23 homers in 73 games for Norfolk. He’s started 31 games at catcher, 19 at first base and 20 at DH. Although he might sit against lefties, Beavers checks in higher on the list since he has an obvious role and should steal some bases. Basallo might be in more of a mix-and-match arrangement with Coby Mayo, Mountcastle and Rutschman for three lineup spots each day.
