April 7 Notes

– Dropping off the top 300 this week: Reynaldo López (179th), Jurickson Profar (212th), Victor Robles (214th), David Bednar (228th), Sean Manaea (235th), Evan Carter (257th), Nestor Cortes (259th), Jake McCarthy (261st), Jordan Beck (268th), Jordan Romano (270th), Michael Massey (279th), Josh Bell (287th), Kirby Yates (292nd), Jacob Young (293rd), Austin Wells (294th), Camilo Doval (298th), Alan Roden (299th)

I kept Carter in the top 300 last week in spite of his Triple-A demotion, but given that he’s thus far 2-for-19 with no extra-base hits for Round Rock, a quick return to the majors seems unlikely.

Romano looked better than I expected this spring, but it obviously hasn’t carried over, and his fastball velocity has averaged 93-94 mph in his last two appearances, compared to 96-97 mph in his previous two. José Alvarado is now the lone Phillies reliever in the top 300. Orion Kerkering is in the 301-310 range, though.

Corbin Carroll has gone from eighth in the final preseason rankings to seventh last week to sixth this week. His average exit velocity, which admittedly is not the best stat, is six mph better than his career average. He’s already hit a ball two mph harder than ever before, and he has six barrels. Swinging harder probably will add a few more strikeouts to the ledger for him, but he has the look of a 30-homer guy.

Austin Riley tumbling from 18th to 24th is less about his own struggles than the slumping Braves dropping him from second to fifth in the lineup. Ozzie Albies, the beneficiary of that switch, has moved up to 87th.

Rafael Devers‘ quick turnaround couldn’t have been much more emphatic, as he hit .526/625/.842 last week. he’s right back up to where I had him in the preseason.

Corbin Burnes drops from 59th to 75th. His cutter velocity has been down in both starts to date, and the control is obviously lacking, too. I’m certainly not going to write off an ace in early April, but it seems like something isn’t quite right.

– I wasn’t expecting Zach Neto to return from shoulder surgery quite this early, but he’s already six games (and two homers) deep into a Triple-A rehab assignment. He climbs from 115th to 90th this week, and he’ll probably settle into the top 75 once he proves he’s healthy.

Hunter Greene is someone I was lower on that most, since I was worried about last year’s late-season elbow troubles, and I hate the situation for pitchers in Cincinnati. However, he’s looked fantastic while averaging 99.7 mph with his fastball through two starts. I imagine the injury risk is still there, but he’s throwing like a top-five pitcher right now. He goes 145th to 92nd.

– Though the Marlins shortstop didn’t wind up missing a game after Sunday’s contest was postponed, some concern about Xavier Edwards‘ right knee him from 84th to 100th.

– I thought I’d be moving up Heliot Ramos some, what with his .308 average and three homers in nine games. However, he’s striking out 30 percent of the time and has worse exit velocity numbers than last year. In fact, he’s gotten his three homers with just one barrel so far.

Jack Leiter was impressive enough in his two starts to jump into the top 300 even as he went on the IL with a blister. I still worry about the walks, but his stuff has improved to the point that he can afford to miss spots as often as he does.

Zac Veen sneaks in at 293rd after it was revealed that the Rockies are promoting him to the majors in place of Jordan Beck. The oft-injured 23-year-old was off to a .387/.472/.677 start in eight Triple-A games. He’s an excellent basestealer, so it’s not a bad idea to take a shot on him at mixed leagues. Still, I imagine he’ll sit against lefties initially, cutting into his upside some.

Iván Herrera comes in at No. 300 after leaving Sunday’s game with knee “inflammation.” It’s hard to buy into that diagnoses, in light of his struggles to just make it off the field, but we’ll see. He would have somewhere in the 250 range prior to the injury. I’d need to see the Cardinals give him some DH time before moving him much higher than that.

March 31 Notes

– Silly me thinking that losing 25 pounds due to illness might slow Mookie Betts down for a while. I lowered him in the rankings at the end of the spring, but he’s back up some now.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. is another guy I moved down some this spring, since it looked like he was going to hit fifth, rather than first or third, in the Yankees lineup. That lasted all of one day, since after the opener, Aaron Judge apparently talked Aaron Boone into moving him back into the third spot in the order. Now, Chisholm is batting cleanup behind Judge.

– I was kind of low on Rafael Devers going into the year, and I’m more concerned now, though I don’t want to overreact. Obviously, he is completely lost at the plate. If I believed that he was healthy and happy, I wouldn’t worry about it. But he might not be either of those things. It still wouldn’t be a surprise if things clicked, and he resumed looking like the Devers of old within a week or two. It also wouldn’t surprise me if he’s batting .170 in mid-May.

Dylan Crews hitting eighth against righties was a nasty surprise after Nationals manager Dave Martinez batted him second all spring. He’s off to a hideous start, too, but it’s mostly the lineup position causing him to drop 11 spots.

– I had Bailey Ober 113th on the list a couple of weeks ago before dropping him into the 150s as his velocity issues continued this spring. He 197th now. Any hope of him flipping the switch in his first regular-season start disappeared as he was shelled for eight runs by the Cardinals (ironically, the opposing pitcher in that one, Andre Pallante, had similar issues this spring but did flip the switch and actually showed a little more velocity than his 2024 averages in his season debut). Maybe he’ll get stronger, and even if he doesn’t, perhaps he’ll still do well enough in WHIP and strikeouts to maintain a little value. There’s definitely good reason for concern, though.

Kyle Manzardo is the highest debut at 207th. Because he’s actually starting against lefties and hitting third versus righties, he’d have made the cut for the top 300 even if he weren’t off to this kind of start.

– Surprising Rangers closer Luke Jackson checks in at 240th. I actually didn’t project a single Rangers reliever to reach double figures in saves this year (I had Chris Martin in the low teens most of the spring, but dropped his projection just prior to Opening Day). I suspect that the team’s ultimate closer will wind up being Jon Gray or Emiliano Teodo or Jack Leiter or maybe someone not currently in the organization. But it’s clearly Jackson for now; Bruce Bochy fed him the ball in the ninth twice more even after he gave up three runs and took a loss on Opening Day, and he converted each time.

– I didn’t touch Jake McCarthy in any leagues this year because, though he’s a quality fantasy outfielder, he’s a worse major leaguer than a healthy Alek Thomas, even if a healthy Alek Thomas is more theoretical than practical. Thomas already appears to be setting himself apart in center field, making McCarthy droppable in shallow leagues.

– The unfortunate Colton Cowser hand injury didn’t quite get Heston Kjerstad a spot on the list, but he should offer some mixed-league value while Cowser is out. Cowser is also out of the top 300 now, though he’ll reappear as his projected return date gets a little closer.
