No. 1 seed Duke added an outright ACC title to its trophy case on Saturday with a victory over rival North Carolina. Now, the Blue Devils will look to add an ACC Tournament championship to its list of accomplishments. It would be the first time since 2006 that Duke won the outright regular season title and the conference tournament in the same year.
However, there will be stiff resistance, particularly from No. 3 seed Clemson and No. 2 seed Louisville. The Tigers were the only ACC team to defeat Duke during the regular season. The Cardinals fell 76-65 in their only regular-season meeting with Duke on Dec. 8.
But since then, first-year coach Pat Kelsey’s club has found its stride. After a hellacious 8-24 season, Kelsey arrived from Charleston and infused Louisville with new life. After beating Stanford at home to close the regular season, the Cardinals enter the postseason on a nine-game winning streak.
The league could end up with just three NCAA Tournament teams depending on how things go in the ACC Tournament for teams such as No. 13 seed Pitt, No. 4 seed Wake Forest and No. 5 seed North Carolina. Though all three are technically “on the bubble” in Jerry Palm’s Bracketology, all of them would need to have long stays in the bracket in order to bolster their hopes of making the Big Dance.
However, it was just one year ago that NC State pulled a stunner by tearing through the ACC Tournament with five wins in five days to secure an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Wolfpack then kept the storybook run going with an unexpected trip to the Final Four. Will the event produce a similarly memorable storyline in 2025?
