$16 Million Golfer Sadly Withdraws During Second Round at John Deere Classic originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

The start of the second round of the John Deere Classic was marred by unfortunate news. First, Nicholas Lindheim had to withdraw due to a back injury and just now, shortly after, another one joins the list.

Andrew Putnam, a golfer with $16 million in career earnings, had to withdraw due to a back injury as well.

He entered Friday’s second round at TPC Deere Run with momentum. He was also included in the field of Rocket Classic, where he finished tied in the eighth position with a score of 19-under par.

At the John Deere Classic, Putnam teed off early in the second round at 6:45 a.m., paired with Bud Cauley and Max McGreevy. Unfortunately, he did not complete the second round.

His performance through one full round was mediocre. Birdies on the par-4 7th and par-5 12th were offset by bogeys on the 3rd and 14th. That put him around even par after 18 holes, positioning him well to contend before his unlucky exit.

Putnam has already added $1.1 million to his purse this year, participating in 16 events. He finished top 10 in two, top 25 in five. Prior to this event, he had no withdrawals.

As things stood at the beginning of the second round, Doug Ghim led the board with a score of 9-under, closely followed by Max Homa and Austin Eckroat, tied in the second with 8-under. They are yet to tee off for the second round.

“Nice to have a great round. It’s been two in the last three weeks where I really got things going. It’s great to have some confidence on the golf course, so that’s the big thing for the most part.” Eckroat said during a press conference on Thursday.

“Confidence level is high. The ball striking is great today. Holed one out. Hit some close. Was solid over the putter. Didn’t make a whole lot of outside putts, but the game was good. Just fun to be in that position.”
