Santos defeated Corinthians in Wednesday’s (15th) derby at Vila Belmiro in the Brasileirão.
The result keeps Peixe in 16th place, the first spot above the relegation zone.
But now they have a six-point lead over 17th place, Vitória, who currently have the same number of matches played in the championship.
Corinthians have only two points more than Santos on the table and end the day in 12th place.
Still sidelined due to injury, Neymar was at Vila Belmiro, was seen celebrating the goals, and even received a tribute from his teammates.
Santos opened the scoring with their first shot of the game, four minutes in, from a corner kick.
Barreal sent the ball into the box and Zé Rafael headed it in to score his first goal for Peixe.
The player who provided the assist for the 1-0 shined again to double the home team’s lead at Vila Belmiro.
Barreal took a shot from outside the box and sent the ball into the top corner, giving no chance to Felipe Longo, the goalkeeper making his professional debut.
Early in the second half, Zé Rafael was decisive again during a corner kick.
He was brought down in the box by Breno Bidon while the ball was in the air, and the referee awarded a penalty after a VAR review.
Rollheiser stepped up and extended Santos’ lead nine minutes into the second half.
Three minutes later, another corner changed the score, with Corinthians showing signs of a comeback.
Matheuzinho crossed the ball and found Raniele’s head, who finished into the net, closing the score.
